As the sun sets, all is quiet as the pogonip (ice fog) slowly blankets Smokey Bear Flat.
The laughter, "yahoo's" that echo from nearby backcountry trails, and excited voices are quiet now. DJ’s team has left for a night ride. The groomer is grooming. The reservationists continue with calls and questions well into the night. How did it all start?
DJ’s Snowmobile Adventures is a local family owned business. The company began in the 1970’s providing snowmobile rentals to Hollywood filmmakers. This service continues today.
In 1981, snowmobile tours were offered to the public. The ride program then, and now, targets the family recreational aspect for snowmobiling in the Eastern High Sierras.
The owners contributed to the community with research, planning and development of a multi-use trail system. A winter recreation map, grooming, signage and trails maintenance programs followed. They organized a snowmobile club. A log cabin warming hut was added to the trails. Both were active in obtaining grants for the US Forest Service and Mono County Sheriff Search and Rescue for the purchase of snowmobiles as a resource.
The economic benefits to the area can only be stated as “extraordinary”. Local agencies and non-profits received millions of dollars in grants. Four new businesses sprang up. Thousands of visitors who owned snowmobiles visited the area. Two state conventions were held in Mammoth Lakes.
DJ's stewartship of the public lands upon which operations take place, is foremost.
DJ's guides and team members have experience as white water rafting, world class climbing, and back country survival instructors. Their gift they wish to pass onto you is to share their love of outdoor adventures and the thrill of snowmobiling.
For visitors who do not own a snowmobile, DJ's Snowmobile Adventures is now serving 3 generations. With input from guests, staff, and partnerships, the ride programs are awesome! The location was the key that allowed the ride programs to expand. Statistics reflect visitors are now coming from all over the world.
